Under the stewardship of Dave Lewis, CEO, Tesco and Emmanuel Faber, Chairman and CEO, Danone, CHL UK is a purpose-driven collaboration that brings together a coalition of members from The Consumer Goods Forum alongside key local stakeholders – including public health authorities, academics, local actors and government figures – to drive behavioural change and positively impact consumer health in the region. It aims to collectively develop a series of structural and behavioural interventions – both in-store and through digital channels – to help customers and employees understand, find and choose healthier options, while also ensuring shared business value.
Companies that have already confirmed their support include: Boots UK, Co-op, Colgate-Palmolive, Danone, Ferrero, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, M&S, Mars UK, McCain, Mondelēz, Nestlé, P&G, PepsiCo, Puratos, Sainsbury’s, and Tesco. The initiative is also supported by Boston Consulting Group, Facebook, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, and the local authorities in Lambeth, Southwark and the City of London.
The Challenge to be Tackled
Almost two-thirds of adults and one-in-five children aged 10-11 in the UK are overweight or obese. Treating obesity puts a huge strain on society. Children are consuming around three times more sugar than is recommended by the government and only a quarter of adults achieve their 5-a-day recommended portions of fruit and vegetables. Other issues the initiative aims to address include smoking, the leading cause of preventable illness and premature death in the UK, and oral hygiene.
The Collaboration for Healthier Lives Journey
The CGF looks forward to the next phase of this journey in the UK starting in March 2019 and appreciates the support of its members and external stakeholders. Success will be measured by the increase in consumption of healthier categories and impact of the interventions throughout participating stores, which will be independently verified by the CGF’s academic partner. It is a live, test-and-learn collaboration, enabling real-time analysis of the potential social impacts of structural and behavioural interventions, which will help CGF members develop new ways of doing business. Such insights can also be fed back to UK Governmental bodies to inform wider efforts to drive behavioural change and nudge consumers towards healthier options.
The CGF is thrilled to be collaborating with such a diverse range of stakeholders to identify which interventions will help consumers make healthier choices and welcomes others to join this unprecedented coalition. This is the power of The Consumer Goods Forum and its commitment to implementing positive change.
How to Get Involved
Similar initiatives have already been launched in five countries (US, Costa Rica, Colombia, Turkey and Japan) and are currently being developed in three more (France, Singapore and Mexico). For those operating in these countries, your support is also welcomed.
